EPPING FOREST OUTDOOR GROUP
On 25th August 2007 seven of us travelled to County Cork, hiring accomodation at Skibbereen. We walked on the coast and in the hills for exercise, took a boat to Cape Clear Island for touring and went to music sessions in the local bars for culture! The usual EFOG mix in almost Mediterranean weather - or should that be Lusitanian? (!) Oh - and we had some pretty good meals, too!

Arriving at Cork airport on 25th August, we picked up our hired cars and drove into Cork City to have a look round and a breakfast. Later, we drove towards Skibbereen, stopping briefly in Clonakilty for our first taste of real Ireland in the form of Barry's Tea! Finding our hired accommodation in the evening, we settled down to our first night.

As was to be the way of the weather just about all of our stay, it was sunny when we awoke and we made our way to the Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve on the coast, doing a bit of walking in the hills and woods near the lough beforehand.

It was hot! - there have been some feet in the reserve, too
Lough Hyne is only 3 miles from Skibbereen, but the following day we embarked on a more distant journey, westwards still to Mizen Head.
From the car-park and cafeteria, it's a pleasant walk on hills above the coast to the lighthouse on the headland. If anything, it was the heat that drained us rather than the distance!
