Birds

Great Crested Grebe: late breeding record - a pair raised two young on Eagle Pond, Snaresbrook, in August/Sept.

Mandarin: one male on Hollow Pond, 15 April.

Little Egret: one present briefly early morning in Wanstead Park, 28 July. Flushed from the Heronry Pond by dog walkers and flew towards Perch Pond.

Stock Dove: Peak count of 14 in Wanstead Park, 21 March.

Tawny Owl: Male and female present in Gilbert's Slade/Hollow Pond area. Calling regularly Aug-Sept. Breeding locally?

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker: one by Hollow Pond, 18 September.

Skylark: single territories on Leyton Flats and in Wanstead Park on the plain, and at least one territory on Wanstead Flats.

Sand Martin: At least six present in Wanstead Park May-July, favouring the Heronry Pond area. Breeding locally?

Kingfisher: Two on Heronry Pond 26 January; pair together along River Roding in Wanstead Park on 21 March.

Grey Wagtail: pair bred in the Eagle Pond/Hollow Pond area, rearing three young (June/July).

Lesser Whitethroat: one in gardens along St Margaret's Road, Aldersbrook, on 3 August.

Grey Wagtail: one by Heronry Pond, 26 January.

Herring Gull: one on playing fields near Aldersbrook changing rooms

Wildfowl counts 2005

Canada Goose: peak count of 185 Leyton Flats, 21 August.

Mallard: peak count of 102 Leyton flats, 16 October.

Shoveler: peak count of 47 Leyton Flats, 16 January.

Pochard: peak count of 14, Leyton Flats, 13 March.

Tufted Duck: peak count of 118, Leyton Flats, 13 March.

Ruddy Duck: 3 on Eagle Pond, 26 June; a pair present in Wanstead Park on Heronry Pond most of summer.

Moorhen; peak count of 21, Leyton Flats, 4 December.

Coot: peak count of 93, Leyton flats, 4 December.
