It took me some time to identify this somewhat strange-looking beetle. It was on a wall in Capel Road, Forest Gate - just across the road from Wanstead Flats.

A search of Essex Field Club's list of species does not show this as being present in Essex, although there is reference to a "Mass Emergence" in the Essex Field Club Newsletter volume 42 (September 2003), plus historic references.

Trawling through my photographs at a later date, I found that I'd first seen the species earlier that year, on 11th July, in my garden
