This Hoverfly Chrysotoxum festivum is the first that I have recognised of this species.

It was perched on the seed-head of a Flag Iris by the Shoulder of Mutton Pond.

My guide to 'British Hoverflies', by Stubbs and Falk, states that it is never abundant, but is widespread in southern England.
