These palms, native to China, Vietnam and Burma, were planted around the Green Man roundabout in preparation for the London Olympics, to be held in nearby Stratford during 2012.

This is the most hardy species of palm used for outdoor planting in Britain.

Also visible in the photograph is the Cabbage Palm, Cordyline australis - a native of New Zealand - also hardy in Britain and frequently planted in milder areas, although not a true palm.
