This was under the lid of a compost bin at the end of my garden, and I think that it is Amaurobius ferox, even though the spider is reputedly much less common than the similar A. fenestralis and A. similis, according to the 'Spider and Harvestman Recording Scheme'. Their website also states that it is more likely to be found in shady and damper situations in walls or at the entrances to caves or tunnels than the other two species.
