Notes
This insect flew across my feet as I walked in undergrowth near Heronry Pond. I couldn't understand why a fully-grown grasshopper was around at this time of year until I identified it as a ground-hopper Tetrix undulata, which survive the winter as adults.
Ground-hoppers differ from grasshoppers in that their pronotum extends to the tip of the abdomen, whereas in grasshoppers it is much shorter. As for the species - the fact that it flew helped, as the other one of the three species in Britain that it was likely to be (T. undulata)is flightless.
