This is actually a millipede, although it looks and behaves something like the familiar pill woodlouse Armadillidium. In fact, I haven't found that species locally.

Glomeris marginata is a common European species of pill milliped - a short millipede, rounded in cross-section, which can roll itself into a ball like the Armadillidium.

It is said to be widespread and common in Britain.
